Color Theory and Mixing is a new five-week course that will cover everything I know about mixing and assessing color. Over the course of five lessons, students will complete weekly painting exercises that distill the basic elements and theory of color as it relates to painting. You will not only learn the fundamentals of mixing color, but also how to perceive, harmonize, and contextualize color in your painting practice. The topics we will cover in the course are:

  • Assessing and matching values
  • Assessing and mixing local color
  • Complimentary color theory and mixing
  • Harmonizing color
  • Color constancy and palette selection

This course is beginner-friendly and can be completed in acrylic, oil, or gouache paint. It is recommended students have a variety of small and larger surfaces to work on as each week we will be doing multiple quick painting exercises. Students will be provided a materials list that breaks down what materials I will be using each week for the demos and exercises, along with a list of recommended materials for beginners. Students who already have a studio/painting set up are welcome to use their own materials as the course is flexible and can be completed in oil, acrylic, and gouache.

The class will consist of both pre-recorded video demos and live weekly lessons via Zoom. This format allows students the freedom to work at their own pace while receiving live feedback and lessons as they progress. All pre-recorded lessons will include short lectures followed by extensive painting demonstrations with multiple camera views to give students the feel of learning in the studio. Live lessons will offer an opportunity for 1-1 feedback and demonstrations where students can work in sync with the instructor during demos, ask questions, and receive feedback in real-time. Recordings will only be available for students enrolled in the class and will be deleted after the course has concluded.
